Last Tuesday, June 4, 2019, I had the chance to visit Treasures Camiguin, a sea glass museum art gallery of Komunidad sa Baibai while vacationing with my family. I heard about the shop sometime last year through an officemate. Because I love unique local products, I can't miss to have a look at this shop which is by the way known even in the international market.
The shop is located along the highway of Brgy. Bug-ong, Mambajao, Island of Camiguin. It is what it is in the picture, ube-colored house.

What I really wanted to see inside are the sea glass accessories. I was not disappointed. It has a LOT.
Broken shards that are 40-100 years old are picked up by the kids from the shores and created into fashionable accessories by women from the community. The broken shards are physically and chemically weathered after how many years in the sea bed. When glass bottles are rolled and softened by the sea waves, they become an extraordinary piece of artwork.
Accordingly, it takes at least 30 years for the ocean to break down glass into sea treasure and not all beaches are capable of doing it that is why a good sea glass is rare to find. We are very lucky to have Camiguin here in Mindanao because it is not only known for its numerous tourist spots but is also popular for its frosted-looking sea glasses.

The shop has a lot of locally made products which makes it more precious to local and international travelers.

The community also produce decorative vases, wind chimes, greeting cards, picture frames and many more out from sea glasses.

I was intending to buy the blue-colored sea glass but the green/white is more affordable. Red, orange, blue and yellow are the rarest kinds that one can find that is why it is priced a bit higher that the common ones.

If you love local-made products that has a beautiful history and support the families in the community, visit Treasures Camiguin. Not only you'll find beautiful pieces of handmade products, you also get to help the people within the community.
