LIHUK, together with other organizers hosted the CDO Earth Week Celebration last April 21-27, 2019 at Ayala Centrio Mall, Cagayan de Oro City. With the theme KinaBuhi (Kinaiyahan Buhion, L.I.F.E. - Life Is For Everyone, the event aims to gather all stakeholders in a week-long of interactions, workshops, learning sessions and promotional campaigns on issues that concern the environment. This is the organizers' way of helping the local government of Cagayan de Oro City in realizing the goal of an environmentally-friendly city.

Together with DENR EMB, CDO CLENRO, JCI Kagayhaan Gold, Make Sense PH, Zero Waste CDO, LIHUK and Modern Nanays of Mindanao, the event started and ended successfully. The whole event was even made more special because of the participation of The Climate Reality Project Philippines, Hope Channel Philippines, Horyou, Ulric Solar, Trashvocacy, A-Gen Power Systems Engineering, Sanicare, Happy Earth Store and Centrio Mall.

Plogging (jogging/running/walking while picking up litters along the way) was initiated by Zero Waste CDO through the leadership of Shari Patayon on April 21. The plogging participants met at the Happy Earth Store at Lane 101, Masterson Avenue, CDO and plogged along the road up to Xavier Heights.

"This event taught us so much things about our purpose as an advocacy. If we do it together as a community, we can make a big change! The amount of garbage collected along Masterson Avenue is a symbol of awareness, a wake-up call to all of us that this planet is really suffering from our human acts. We walked the highway with our children seeing so much garbage but we have high hopes that the next plogging will be a different story, lesser trash - more responsible communities." - Shari Patayon

Plogging is for everyone, even Daddies who wear their babies!

Collected litters are being segregated by one of LIHUK's volunteer, Juan Dave

Right after the trash audit by CDO CLENRO, it's another family time to those who brought their kids along with them. The kids enjoyed the Easter egg painting using plant and food-based paints. Then instead of having the usual egg hunting, gummy candies and chocolate treats in reusable jars were hidden within the area for the children to hunt. What an ideal way of opening the Earth Week - plastic-free way!

The following day until Saturday, different activities were done simultaneously at Ayala Centrio Mall. Earth week trade fair, Earth Day forum, presentation and signing of the commitment board, group discussion and presentation of action plans, Trashvocacy booking, zero waste challenge, different workshops, eco-parenting talk and Earth jam featuring some of the local bands and talents were all squeezed into a week to make the activity fun-filled and insightful.

The organizers, LIHUK specifically, wants everyone to celebrate Mother Earth everyday. She is worthy of respect. When the Earth is sick and polluted, human health is impossible. The Earth can stand on its own but because it has been abused by the humanity, it needs our protection.

The Earth offers us everything in order to survive, so let's help it grow and heal.

Although this year's celebration was a success, the fight for ecological sustainability should live in our hearts every single day. The activities prepared by the organizers aims to aid us in our everyday battle against single-use plastic and allow to see endless options on how to live sustainably.
